The Elkhart Central gymnastics team had a memorable night and posted their 3rd straight win on Monday against Lakeland and New Prairie High Schools. The Blazers won the meet with a 107.6, Lakeland 93.05 and New Prairie 9.0.
Junior Analena VanderZwaag broke the school record on vault with a 9.60 and took first place. The old record (9.55) was posted by Desi Mosiman in 2011. The team also broke the school record for team vault score with a 27.70. VanderZwaag along with teammates Skiler Reveal (2nd place) and Rylee Damewood (5th place) are now the new record holders. The old record (27.6) was posted in 2015 by Libby Yeakey, Kiara Stabler and Skiler Reveal.
On bars, VanderZwaag, Reveal, sophomore Ellie Dobson and senior Estela Pedraza placed 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively with teammates Mia Echartea (8th), Xochitl Gallegos (9th) and Mackenzie Scott (10th).
Even thought the Blazers continue to struggle on the beam early in the season, VanderZwaag, Reveal, Damewood, Gallegos, Scott and freshman Meleena Strukel won the top 6 spots with Pedraza taking 8th.
On floor, VanderZwaag (9.7), Reveal (9.5) and Pedraza (9.3) tied the school record for team floor score with a 28.5 combined score and placed 1, 2 and 3. Teammates Rylee Damewood placed 4th, Gallegos 7th and Strukel 8th.
In the all around, VanderZwaag posted a season high 37.3 placing 1st. Reveal (35.7) took 2nd, Damewood 3rd (34.0) and Pedraza 4th (33.2).
The Blazers travel to Chesterton on Saturday to compete in the 8 team Trojan Invitational. Meet time is noon (EST).
